Topsfield Boxford and Middleton Rotary Deliver Books to Tri Town Students

The Proctor School was visited by the Rotary Club of Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton members, Bernie Creedon, Bill Shannon and Joe Long on January 28th. That afternoon the three distributed thesauruses and atlases to every student in the 4th and 5th grade classes. Bill and Bernie both spoke to the students about how they will use these reference books as part of their school work and in life. Students in all six of the Tri Town’s elementary schools benefited from the Rotary Club’s efforts and the books are theirs to keep.
The Rotary “Dictionary Program” was started by former Middleton Town Accountant Bob Murphy in 2004 and to date and evolved into something larger when the thesauruses and atlases were introduced. To date over 7,000 books have been handed out. Murphy said that, “This program is a great opportunity for our Rotary Club to participate in a local community project that makes a difference in the three towns we serve.”
The idea for the project came out of Rotary International’s schoolbook project which is working towards the goal of sending these books to every elementary school in the Nation. The organization hopes to have a positive impact on education in this country, and empower children to become skillful communicators and resourceful learners.
Murphy said that the children who receive the dictionaries, thesauruses and atlases learn not just the value of school work, but also about community service. Each year the Rotary Club collaborates with principals and teachers of the Tri-Town Union to ensure that the program continues its legacy. “The most important thing to me is getting this information to the kids,” said Murphy. Students will use the books throughout the year and will bring them home when the school years finishes.
